Bargate Stone Hybrid Home – Surrey, 2024

A Harmonious Fusion of Traditional Craftsmanship and Modern Sustainability

In the heart of Surrey, a tired dwelling has been reimagined into a beacon of sustainable British architecture. The Bargate Stone Hybrid Home by Winchester Design & Build is a celebration of craftsmanship, innovation, and environmental design — a project that seamlessly combines locally quarried materials with advanced renewable technologies.

This 2024 commission represents more than a rebuild. It is an architectural dialogue between heritage and progress, executed with precision by our in-house NHBC-approved design and construction team.

Designing with Heritage and Context

Timeless Materials, Intelligent Engineering — A Home Designed for the Future

The existing building, typical of mid-century Surrey housing, no longer met the energy or spatial standards expected of a modern family home. The client’s ambition was to create a house that would endure, beautiful, efficient, and contextually respectful.

Our architectural response drew directly from the Surrey Hills vernacular. The locally quarried Bargate stone, with its warm honey hues and subtle variation, became the defining element. Its historic resonance grounded the new architecture in place, while the precision-cut anthracite framing and contemporary glazing elevated the design with a crisp modern contrast.

The resulting form is elegant yet robust — a building that belongs as much to its landscape as it does to its time.

Built on Sustainability and Smart Technology

Redefining Sustainable Luxury Through Authentic Surrey Craftsmanship

From the project’s conception, sustainability was the guiding principle. Every system, junction, and surface was designed to support renewable operation and low-carbon performance.

Key environmental features include:

  • Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) providing renewable heating and hot water.
  • Solar PV array with integrated battery storage generating and storing power on-site.
  • Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) maintaining healthy air quality while reclaiming 90% of internal heat.
  • Underfloor heating for thermal consistency and comfort.
  • Triple-glazed windows and airtight construction ensuring exceptional U-values and year-round efficiency.

Together, these technologies create a home operating with over 60% less energy than a typical dwelling of comparable size,  a meaningful achievement in both sustainability and comfort.

Construction Precision

Winchester Design & Build’s in-house construction division delivered the project under a comprehensive design-and-build framework, ensuring architectural integrity was maintained from drawing board to completion.

A reinforced insulated slab foundation was engineered to support both the retained and new elements. The hand-dressed Bargate stone façade was laid using lime mortars, preserving breathability while achieving enduring weather resistance.

Completed in just ten months, the home stands as a testament to our integrated approach — where design, engineering, and construction expertise work in perfect unison.

Interiors Defined by Light and Texture

The interiors are calm, tactile, and enduringly elegant. Natural light floods through double-height gable glazing, illuminating limestone floors and bespoke oak joinery. The palette is neutral yet rich in texture, giving the home a refined, timeless character.

The entire environment is orchestrated through a Loxone smart-home system, allowing seamless control of heating, ventilation, lighting, and energy management — ensuring the home performs as efficiently as it looks.

Planning and Material Integrity

Achieving approval for a contemporary design in a semi-rural Surrey location required architectural sensitivity and policy fluency. The use of Bargate stone was pivotal, aligning the proposal with local distinctiveness and heritage policy under the Surrey Hills Design Guide and NPPF paragraph 130(f).

By demonstrating material authenticity and measurable environmental benefit, the scheme was unanimously approved by the Local Planning Authority and commended for its “exemplary sustainability integration and regional character.”

Reflecting the Future of Sustainable Living

The Bargate Stone Hybrid Home embodies Winchester Design & Build’s design philosophy — that sustainability and beauty are inseparable. It represents the future of British housing: rooted in craftsmanship, powered by innovation, and delivered with total technical confidence.

This Surrey project exemplifies how architect-led design and construction can produce homes that are at once timeless, efficient, and emotionally resonant.
