At Winchester Design & Build, we approach every commission with the belief that practicality and beauty should coexist. This bespoke boot room in Cheriton, Hampshire, completed in 2025, transforms a once-cluttered entrance into a serene and functional space that perfectly reflects the rhythm of country life.

Design Brief and Concept

The homeowners, long-time clients of Winchester Design & Build, wanted to introduce a purpose-built boot room that could withstand the daily demands of rural living — particularly the management of their two dogs — while maintaining the architectural integrity of their period property.

Our brief was simple in words yet complex in delivery: create a durable, easy-to-clean environment that complements the home’s heritage character and elevates its aesthetic continuity.

The design balances traditional craftsmanship with modern utility, combining natural materials, generous daylight, and custom joinery to achieve a space that feels both timeless and efficient.

Architectural Detailing and Materiality

The boot room’s architectural character draws inspiration from classic Hampshire country houses, combining Bargate stone walling, solid oak joinery, and limestone flag flooring in perfect harmony. The vertical tongue-and-groove panelling, painted in a soft heritage tone, lends depth and warmth to the space, while discreet LED lighting enhances the natural variation of textures.

A central roof lantern provides an ever-changing wash of daylight, bringing a subtle connection to the outdoors. Every line of the cabinetry was tailored in-house to ensure function, proportion, and longevity — from the built-in coat storage to the handcrafted oak bench with concealed baskets beneath.

This careful balance of tactile authenticity and understated luxury is what defines Winchester Design & Build’s interior architecture: solid, enduring, and effortlessly elegant.

Functionality and Comfort

Designed for real living, the boot room offers a considered transition between garden and home. Durable stone floors and ventilated cabinetry manage the daily wear of family life and wet weather, while every surface is easy to maintain.

The layout was carefully planned to support dog care routines, storage needs, and circulation between adjoining rooms, ensuring the space feels integral rather than ancillary. The overall effect is a room that enhances lifestyle and convenience without losing its architectural grace.

Lighting and Ambience

Natural light floods the room via the overhead roof lantern, complemented by warm, recessed lighting for evening use. The interplay of light and material textures — limestone, oak, paint, and stone creates a tranquil and inviting atmosphere throughout the day.

This approach mirrors Winchester Design & Build’s broader design philosophy: architecture that responds to both function and feeling, where the smallest details contribute to the lived experience of the home.

Outcome and Client Impact

For the Cheriton homeowners, the new boot room has transformed daily life. It delivers organised storage, dog-friendly practicality, and architectural cohesion, enhancing both the functionality and value of the property.
