How Winchester Design and Build is Redefining Sustainable Living Through Craftsmanship and Innovation

A Masterclass in Sustainable Architecture and Contemporary Craftsmanship

Winchester Design & Build proudly presents this exceptional oak-framed family home, designed and delivered in the heart of rural Berkshire. This landmark project demonstrates the very best in sustainable construction, technical precision, and timeless architectural character.

The commission involved the demolition of an outdated bungalow and its replacement with a luxury oak frame dwelling, conceived to stand as a model for environmentally responsible living. Built to the highest sustainability standards, the home integrates advanced renewable technologies and future-proof systems to ensure long-term comfort, efficiency, and minimal environmental impact.

Design Concept and Architectural Vision

Our architectural vision was clear from the outset to create a home that feels authentically rural yet performs to modern passive house principles.

The house is based around a bespoke oak frame structure, precision-engineered off-site by our trusted framing partner. Each component was designed using 3D modelling to ensure an exact fit over our specially designed reinforced foundations, laid by Winchester Design & Build’s in-house partner NHBC-approved contractor.

Large areas of glazing flood the interiors with natural light, reducing daytime energy demand and connecting the home to its landscaped surroundings. The structure’s geometry celebrates natural materiality while meeting stringent modern standards for energy efficiency and airtightness.

Sustainability and Environmental Performance

This project was designed to reach the highest levels of sustainability, combining traditional craftsmanship with advanced environmental technologies.

Key features include:

  • Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) providing renewable, low-carbon heating and hot water.
  • Solar PV system with Tesla battery storage, enabling on-site energy generation and storage for self-sufficiency.
  • Rainwater harvesting system for garden irrigation and greywater supply, reducing reliance on mains water.
  • Passive home technology, incorporating high-performance insulation, triple glazing, and controlled ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR).

These measures, together with the building’s natural oak thermal mass and high levels of air-tightness, create a home that operates at exceptionally low energy demand, future-proofed for generations to come.
