When our Winchester clients approached Winchester Design and Build, their vision was straightforward yet ambitious. They wanted to transform the rear of their traditional semi-detached house into a contemporary open-plan kitchen and living space that would provide the long-desired “wow” factor, a place to cook, dine, relax and enjoy family life.
Our brief quickly evolved beyond a simple extension. The clients wanted a design that would redefine how they used their home, merging architecture, light and landscape into one connected experience.
Design Vision
Our concept began with a single guiding idea, to bring the garden into the home and the home into the garden.
We proposed a full-width rear extension featuring broad bi-fold doors opening directly onto a re-levelled stone terrace. The interior floor and terrace levels were designed flush to remove any threshold, creating a seamless visual and physical connection between inside and outside.
Above, discreet roof lights draw sunlight deep into the heart of the kitchen, balancing the north-facing aspect and ensuring the space feels naturally bright throughout the day. The architectural form is simple and refined, defined by clean horizontal lines and crisp detailing that quietly complement the existing house.
Interior Architecture
Inside, the transformation is striking.
The new open-plan kitchen flows effortlessly into a dining and seating zone, forming a multifunctional space where the family can gather, entertain and unwind.
Our designers carefully balanced material warmth and contemporary clarity — dark cabinetry contrasts with natural flooring and soft neutral walls, creating a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere. The kitchen island anchors the composition, offering both function and social focus.
Every element, from the layout to the lighting, was considered to enhance the client’s lifestyle. The bi-fold doors allow the entire rear wall to disappear on summer days, extending the living area into the terrace and garden beyond.
Outdoor Design and Landscaping
The project extended into a full landscape redesign of the rear garden, turning the outdoor area into a natural continuation of the new living space.
The stone-paved terrace provides generous dining and lounging zones, bordered by planters filled with textured foliage and evergreens for year-round colour. The levels were adjusted to create clear sightlines from the kitchen to the garden while maintaining privacy from neighbouring properties.
This continuity of design — from interior finishes to external materials — is what elevates the project. The family now experiences a single, cohesive environment that feels calm, balanced and beautifully connected to nature.

The completed project is both visually striking and immensely practical.
The home now features a bright, spacious and energy-efficient kitchen, perfectly suited to modern family life. The terrace and planting bring an atmosphere of Mediterranean openness, ideal for entertaining or quiet reflection.
