Client Vision and Appointment
The owners of the Wield House Project, a five-bedroom property set within sixteen acres of prime Hampshire countryside, approached Gary White, Architectural Practitioner, Senior Planning Expert and Director of Winchester Design & Build, with a clear ambition – to transform a dated, moss-covered dwelling into a light-filled, energy-efficient, and architecturally distinguished family home.
With now over 393 successful planning approvals and a reputation for fusing technical excellence with strategic planning permission, Gary and his team were perfectly placed to deliver the vision. The resulting scheme went on to win “Best Small Practice Architect – Hampshire, UK”, awarded for its combination of sustainability, architectural innovation, and rural sensitivity.
Architectural Transformation
The original house suffered from limited natural light, inefficient heating, poor insulation and a disjointed internal layout. Through extensive redesign, the Wield House Project was structurally and aesthetically re-engineered to achieve both grandeur and efficiency.
Key interventions included:
- A new portal-framed, double-height glazed two storey entrance, establishing a dramatic focal point while drawing daylight deep into the interior.
- New dormers and restructured roof forms to balance proportion and increase first-floor living space.
- Full internal reconfiguration, replacing cellular rooms with open-plan living zones.
- French-grey high-performance glazing to enhance light, acoustic insulation, and thermal efficiency.
- A redesigned driveway and approach sequence, restoring formality and countryside charm.
The finished architecture delivers contemporary performance within a language that remains firmly rooted in Hampshire’s rural vernacular.
Sustainability and Renewable Energy Systems
The project was engineered around sustainability and energy independence — a principle that helped secure its award recognition.
A full suite of renewable systems ensures the home is both low-carbon and low-maintenance:
- Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP): 400 % efficient, supplying renewable heating and hot water.
- Smart Hot-Water Cylinder & Underfloor Heating: Zoned, intelligent distribution for comfort and control.
- Herschel Infrared Ceiling Panels: Installed throughout the first floor for targeted radiant heating.
- Solar PV Array on the Stable Block: Discreetly integrated to provide renewable electricity generation and battery storage, powering both the main house and auxiliary systems.
- High-Performance Insulation & Triple Glazing: Achieving exceptional U-values and airtightness.
Together, these technologies have reduced operational energy consumption by over 70 %, future-proofing the property for decades to come.
Interior Architecture and Design
Internally, the transformation is as dramatic as it is refined.
- A bespoke Magnet kitchen forms the social heart of the home, complemented by large-format porcelain flooring with underfloor heating.
- The open-plan dining and living areas enjoy uninterrupted countryside views through full-height glazing.
- A restored brick inglenook fireplace provides warmth and heritage character within a modern context.
- The principal suite, finished in soft heritage greens, opens directly onto the landscape through French-grey glazed doors.
- Guest bedrooms and bathrooms blend neutral palettes with elegant freestanding baths, walk-in showers, and natural materials.
- The re-engineered conservatory now features slimline glazing and improved thermal performance, transforming it into a year-round living space.
Landscape and Setting
Externally, a new gravel driveway, landscaped boundaries, and strategic planting anchor the home naturally within its sixteen-acre estate. The solar array on the stable block sits subtly within the roofline, avoiding visual intrusion while powering renewable systems across the property.
Every principal room enjoys framed views across open countryside — reinforcing the relationship between architecture and landscape that defines the Winchester Design & Build ethos.
